Steps for successful Writing
A good report or review has a title, an introduction, a body & a conclusion.
Prewriting:
- Brainstorm topics you might like to write about.
- Draw up a list of things you could write about each topic.
- Choose the topic you know the most about & one which would be of interest to others.
- Draw up a list of important facts.
- Decide who your audience might be – young children, sports fans, etc.
- Discuss relevant language needed for report or review.
- Use help templates available in Resource section of this blog.
- Use newspapers & magazines to look at reports & reviews already written for the general public.
- Note layout, language, terminology used, etc.
- Refer to ‘RTE Player’, ‘The View’ & other audio visual reports & reviews to give children a flavour of different methods of presentation.
Writing:
- Discuss necessary information required to write report / review, using templates available in Resource section.
- Write your first draft, concentrating on what you want to say, refering to the list of important facts.
- Make sure you answer the 5 W’s – Who, What, Where, When & Why.
- Use quotations.
- Avoid using the same sentence pattern all the time.
Revising:
- Read your draft by yourself.
- Read it to your partner.
- Collaborate on improvements – language, sentence structure etc.
- Rewrite the report including your changes.
Editing & Proofreading:
- Proofread for spelling, punctuation & grammar.
- Correct, recopy or type your final draft.
- Choose an attention grabbing headline.
Publish:
- Decide how you will publish your piece of writing.
- If publishing by print children can decide to locate suitable photograph to accompany piece.
- Also if uploading to blog, children can write a post & include suitable photograph to advertise podcast.
