Tips for Writing a Report
Introduction
- Use dramatic language to catch the readers attention
- Have a lead or ‘opening’ sentence which is the main point of the report – usually the ‘score’ & ‘who won!
Main Body:
- Write in the past tense
- Write in the third person.
- Write in paragraphs
- Write about what happened
- Use vivid / significant details
- Use sequential words
- Write in chronological order
- Use technical vocabulary
- Use quotes from both sides – winners & losers
- Use adjectives to capture the atmosphere of the game
- Give some game statistics
- Always check your facts!
Concluding paragraph.
- Sum up the game
- Let readers know what will happen as a result of game
- Give team records & who they will play next
- Give standing in league tables, ranking etc.
- Comment on a player performance
Choosing a Headline
- Compose a title that is clear, concise & exiting
- Give eye catching information in 5/6 words
- Make it a quick statement about the game e.g. ‘Handy Henry ends Ireland dream in Paris’ Irish Times 18 / 11 /2009
