Getting started
If you have never made a podcast it can seem daunting, however with only a pc / laptop & a microphone it is relatively simple to do.
Some headphones come with a microphone on the side & this is adequate for children speaking by themselves. Alternatively buy a cheap microphone in any PC Store for about €10.
Go to http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/beta_windows
Scroll down until you find the Installer which matches your operating system i.e. Windows XP / Vista or earlier & download & install the Audacity file. When you open Audacity you can record straight into it. Your recordings will appear like sound waves. The controls for using Audacity are the same controls we used on a tape recorder; Stop, Rewind, Forward etc. Give your files a title & save.
If you are playing your podcast from your PC you can do so. If you want to upload it to your school blog you may need to export it as an MP3 file. To do this you can use a piece of software called ‘lame’ which is available on the same link as Audacity.
Teach the process of Report Writing’ or ‘Persuasive Writing’ using the tips & templates provided.
Get the children writing & editing their reports & reviews.
When their piece is finished, record it using Audacity to create a podcast.
Upload the Report / Review together with podcast on to your blog & leave your comment box open. Alternatively email to me, at maryddns@gmail.com , to be included on this site, for publishing & sharing.
Even if you don’t wish to start podcasting straight away, you could begin by letting your class read some of the reports & reviews already uploaded. If they wish they can share some of their thoughts & opinions with the authors via the comments box.
Then you can begin to write your own reports & reviews & have them uploaded for publishing & sharing. Eventually you will begin to podcast & it adds a whole new dimension to publishing for children.
Happy podcasting! 🙂
